During the Western Han Dynasty, a boy named Kuāng Héng lived in a poor family. They couldn&#;t afford candles for him to read at night.

One night, he noticed a faint light coming through a crack in the wall from his neighbor&#;s house.

Later, with hard work, he became a knowledgeable official.

守株待兔

Once upon a time, a farmer worked hard in the fields but longed for an easier way to get food.

One day, a hare ran fast and accidentally hit a tree stump, dying instantly.

一天，一只野兔飞奔时撞到树桩，当场死亡。

狐假虎威

In the Spring and Autumn Period, a tiger caught a fox in the forest. The fox, cleverly, said: &#;You can&#;t eat me! The Heaven made me king of all animals. Eating me goes against Heaven&#;s order.&#;

春秋时期，老虎在森林里抓住了一只狐狸。狐狸机智地说：“你不能吃我！天帝让我做百兽之王，吃我就是违背天帝的命令。”

The tiger doubted this. The fox then proposed: &#;Walk with me in the forest—all animals will flee at the sight of me.&#;

As they walked, animals ran away (fearing the tiger). The fox proudly told the tiger, &#;They fear me, not you!&#; The tiger believed it and let the fox go.

At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Liu Bei sought talented people to help him. He heard Zhuge Liang, a wise man, lived in a thatched cottage.

东汉末年，刘备想寻贤才相助，听闻智者诸葛亮住在茅庐中。

Liu Bei visited Zhuge Liang three times. The first two times, Zhuge Liang was absent.

刘备三次拜访诸葛亮，前两次都扑了空。

On the third visit, Zhuge Liang was sleeping. Liu Bei waited patiently outside until he woke up.

第三次去时，诸葛亮正在睡觉，刘备在茅庐外耐心等候，直到他醒来。

Moved by Liu Bei&#;s sincerity, Zhuge Liang agreed to help and became his key advisor.

A greedy landlord forced Ma Liang to paint gold for him.一个贪婪的地主强迫马良为他画金子。

Ma Liang tricked the landlord: he painted a gold mountain, then a ship. When the landlord got on the ship to reach the mountain, Ma Liang painted a storm. The ship sank, and the landlord disappeared.

After that, Ma Liang used the brush to help poor people, painting food, clothes, and houses for them.

Long ago, a cowherd lived with a magical ox that could talk. The ox told him seven fairy sisters bathed in a lake, and the youngest (Weaver Girl) was the most beautiful.

很久以前，牛郎和一头会说话的神牛生活。神牛告诉他，七位仙女会去湖里洗澡，最小的织女最美丽。

王母娘娘因织女嫁凡人而震怒，把她带回天庭。神牛让牛郎用它的皮飞到天庭，王母却在两人之间画了一条银河（天河）。

Once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, magpies form a bridge for them to meet.

每年农历七月初七，喜鹊会搭成桥，让牛郎和织女相会。

故事 9：Yu Gong Moves a Mountain

愚公移山

Two big mountains blocked Yu Gong&#;s home, making it hard to go out. Though old, Yu Gong decided to move them.

两座大山挡住了愚公的家，出行很困难。尽管年迈，愚公仍决定移山。

His wife doubted: &#;You&#;re too old, and the mountains are too big!&#; Yu Gong replied: &#;My sons, grandsons will keep doing it. The mountains won&#;t grow—they&#;ll be moved someday.&#;

妻子质疑：“你太老了，山又太大！” 愚公答：“我的子孙会继续，山不会长高，总有一天能移走。”

A Heaven spirit, moved by his determination, sent two gods to take the mountains away. Yu Gong&#;s family could then go out easily.

故事 ：Zhaojun Departs the Frontier

昭君出塞

During the Han Dynasty, Wang Zhaojun, a palace maid, volunteered to marry the Xiongnu leader to bring peace between the Han and Xiongnu.

汉朝时，宫女王昭君自愿嫁给匈奴首领，以促进汉匈和平。

When she left for the frontier, she played the lute sadly. Her music was so beautiful that birds stopped flying and horses stopped walking to listen.

出发去边塞时，她悲伤地弹起琵琶。乐声太美，鸟儿停飞、马儿驻足聆听。

Wang Zhaojun brought Han culture to the Xiongnu and helped the two groups live in peace for years.

故事 ：The Story of the White Snake

白蛇传

A white snake spirit, Bai Suzhen, turned into a woman to experience human life. She met and married a scholar, Xu Xian.

白蛇精白素贞化为人形体验人间生活，与书生许仙相遇并结婚。

A monk named Fa Hai knew Bai Suzhen was a snake. He tricked Xu Xian into making her drink realgar wine during the Dragon Boat Festival.

和尚法海知道白素贞是蛇精，骗许仙让她在端午节喝雄黄酒。

After drinking, Bai Suzhen turned into a huge white snake, scaring Xu Xian to faint. She stole immortal grass to save him, then was trapped under Leifeng Pagoda by Fa Hai.

喝下酒后，白素贞变回巨蛇，许仙被吓晕。她偷仙草救了许仙，随后被法海关在雷峰塔下。

Years later, their son saved her, and the family reunited.

多年后，他们的儿子救出了她，一家人得以团聚。

故事 ：The Great Wall and Meng Jiangnu

孟姜女哭长城

During the Qin Dynasty, the emperor ordered people to build the Great Wall. Fan Xiliang, a young man, was taken to build it.

Fan Xiliang married Meng Jiangnu, but was taken away soon after. A year later, Meng Jiangnu went to the Great Wall to find him.

She learned Fan Xiliang had died and was buried under the wall. Meng Jiangnu cried for three days and nights—part of the Great Wall collapsed, revealing his body.

故事 ：The Legend of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea
